Loneliness
At every World Cup, each squad carries three goalkeepers. The third-choice goalkeeper travels with the team, trains every day, wears the uniform, and stands in the tunnel before every match. He almost certainly never plays a single minute. Technically included, suited up, present for the whole thing, but on the outside of everything actually happening.
A lot of people know that feeling. Surrounded by people and still completely alone, present in the room but not really in it. You figured out early that the version of you people responded to wasn't quite the real version, and at some point the performance became automatic.
In this session, Pastor Holly shares what it was like to invite her whole class to her 10th birthday party and have one person show up, who left early. We also look at a woman in John 4 who the whole city already knew about, who came to the well alone at noon, and who became the first person in the Gospel of John that Jesus revealed himself to directly.
If you've been performing for belonging for so long you've lost track of what the real version looks like, this is for you.
